A confidence trick or confidence game (also known as a bunko, con, flim flam, gaffle, grift, hustle, scam, scheme, swindle or bamboozle) is an attempt to defraud a person or group by gaining their confidence. The victim is known as the mark, the trickster is called a confidence man, con man, or con artist, and any accomplices are known as shills. Confidence men exploit human characteristics such as greed and dishonesty, and have victimized individuals from all walks of life. HistoryThe first known usage of the term "confidence man" in English was in 1849; it was used by American press during the United States trial of William Thompson. Thompson chatted with strangers until he asked if they had the confidence to lend him their watches, whereupon he would walk off with the watch; he was captured when a victim recognised him on the street. From Google News Search: "Confidence trick" What would you say about confidence in trying new tricks?!? Q. I have been skateboarding I think for about 2 or 3 weeks. When I want to learn a new trick I practice in the grass, then i take it to the streets. I don't have confidence even when I'm on the grass. I don't have any protective gear yet but still with the gear or not, I'm pretty nervous about falling and getting hurt. Any way into getting more confidence?! Asked by Retroness_is_love@hotmail.com - Wed Jul 18 22:10:15 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. based on my experience so far, I feel that to fall/trip/hit by the deck while learning is a step closer to pulling off the trick. Fear prevents you or me to learn something new. Its like you want to try to ollie down a 3 set (stairs) , you'll be worried about speed, height of your ollie etc but once you ollie off the set, whether you land the trick or not, you'll have more confidence to try it again and again till you land it. I don't skate with protective gear too, so I get lots of bruises, cuts and whatevers when I bail or fall. At any case, try the trick once or twice, you'll get rid of the fear over time. Cheers and skate hard. Answered by experimentgw - Thu Jul 19 07:27:16 2007 Can someone please help me understand what confidence means? Q. For the past few months I have been having conflicting thoughts whether if I am a confident person or not. At times I feel confident, I would look in a mirror and I would feel good at the person staring back, but other times I feel as if my confidence certainly vanished. Is it possible that a person can feel confident one day and not the other? Is confidence just a matter of thought that our brain plays tricks on us? I am a 20 year old student in college, so I guess I am at an age where things can seem very confusing. Asked by The New Guy - Sun Aug 26 01:06:38 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Acceptance and approval of oneself. Sometimes, self-improvement and enhancement are necessary to feel good about oneself. You have to like yourself at a basic level to be happy. Q. Okay i am seeing this guy. He is really cute and sweet. He always compliments me and treats me well. But he has this thing with never being good enough. I think it was how he was raised. He always asks if he is being strange or if he is doing anything wrong. He apologizes for everything. It almost makes me want to get up and scream "This is strange, the apologizing thing when you didnt do anything wrong".. But i know better and would never. I just explain quietly that he did absolutely nothing wrong and that when he did i would tell him. I really like him alot. He also treats me like im up on some pedastal.. like he isnt worthy ... it was really sweet at first but then i quickly realized there was something wrong. Its not good to have such… [cont.] Asked by pinkcandiez871 - Mon Jan 14 18:24:18 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't think you should keep it silent. You need to talk to him, and tell him that it makes you feel uncomfortable. If you don't want to, you can probably say, "You're like the only person that never bothers," so he won't think he is always bothering you, but that would be a lie. That is because he is bothering you, with the way he is always asking. Just reassure him that you like him, and just let him know that you aren't any better than him. He could just be 'warming up' to you, and he's probably just trying to make a good impression on you. Once you guys get to know each other better, he will probably be more comfortable with you, and not worry so much. Just talk to him, and tell him not to worry all the time. Or, you can tell him… [cont.] Answered by ... - Mon Jan 14 18:36:22 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Confidence trick" |
